Dell Unity end of life: your options, and migrating to PowerStore

Original Unity arrays have passed end of standard support, and Unity XT All Flash is no longer sold. Here are the real dates from Dell’s own list, what they mean for you, your options, and how a move to PowerStore actually works, from people who spent over a decade selling these arrays at EMC.

In short

Original Unity arrays passed end of standard support on 31 July 2026, and Unity XT All Flash stopped being sold on 1 August 2025. Unity XT All Flash is supported until 31 July 2030 and Unity XT hybrid until 31 January 2033, so XT owners have time, but not to waste. Dell’s successor is PowerStore, with import tools that bring data across from Unity. A refresh is also the moment to check whether PowerStore, or something else, fits your workloads best.

Who we are

C4C is an independent UK technology consultancy and an official Dell Technologies partner. Nick Watson and Paul Smith each spent over a decade at EMC, which Dell later bought, selling these arrays to finance, banking and telcos, so we know the estate, the upgrade paths and how Dell sells the refresh. We supply, implement and support Dell storage, with hardware break fix support from Dell as normal for enterprise arrays. We also partner with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data and are tied to none of them, so we will tell you if staying put, extending or moving to another platform is the better answer. Tell us what you run.

When is Dell Unity end of life?

The dates below come from Dell’s own end of life list. End of sale is the last date a product can be ordered. End of standard support is the date after which Dell no longer guarantees maintenance and fixes. Two details matter. First, Dell’s rows for EU countries show an end of sale of 31 July 2026 for the Unity XT hybrid models, against 31 January 2028 elsewhere, so confirm with Dell which applies to a UK order. Second, Dell lists the end of security support for Unity XT All Flash as 31 July 2030. Source: Dell KB 000208328, security support policy. Our Dell EMC end of life dates guide covers the rest of the Dell EMC estate.

What does the Unity XT end of sale mean for you?

Nothing changes overnight. A Unity XT All Flash array you own keeps its support until 31 July 2030, and you can add capacity until the end of expansion date of 4 August 2028. What changes is the planning horizon. You can no longer buy new All Flash systems to grow the estate, and every year closer to 2030 narrows your negotiating room on the refresh. Original Unity models are a different story: past end of standard support, they should already be on a replacement plan.

What are your options?

  • Refresh to PowerStore. The natural successor, with Dell import tooling for Unity and a familiar management model. Usually the lowest risk route if a midrange unified array still fits.
  • Move to another platform. If your workloads have changed, for example heavy file, scale out or AI data, compare PowerStore with the alternatives on your numbers. See our Dell vs NetApp vs Pure Storage comparison.
  • Consolidate. Several Unity systems can often become one, with better data reduction and lower power and support costs.
  • Extend for a while. For a system you plan to retire within a year or two, third party maintenance can buy time at lower cost, with real trade offs: no new firmware or features, no security updates after the end of security support date, and a different route for parts and escalation.

How do you migrate from Unity to PowerStore?

Dell provides Universal Storage Import tools for exactly this. Dell says customers can consolidate data from Unity, Unity XT, SC Series, PS Series, VNX2, VMAX3, XtremIO and third party platforms onto a single PowerStore system. Source: Dell, February 2025.

  • Inventory first. Block volumes, file systems, protocols, snapshots, replication and the hosts that depend on them. Most surprises in a migration come from what nobody listed.
  • Choose the method per workload. Block and file imports work differently, some methods need a short outage, and native file import depends on the PowerStoreOS version. Check Dell’s current documentation for what your source and target support.
  • Plan cutover and rollback. Agree the windows with the business, test with real workloads, and keep the old array available until the new one has proved itself.
  • Time it against support dates. Finish before the support date that matters, with margin, rather than migrating against a deadline.

We plan and deliver these migrations with Dell professional services, our team or yours, whichever is best for you. Talk to us about your Unity estate.

When might another platform fit better?

PowerStore is a strong midrange array, and for many Unity estates it is the right answer. It is less obviously right where file and multicloud data management dominate, where scale out file or object is the real need, or where AI data pipelines are driving the refresh. Because we also partner with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data and are tied to none of them, we will tell you which fits, and why. Our guides to PowerStore vs PowerMax vs Unity and Dell storage go further.

Planning a Unity refresh?

Tell us what you run and when support ends. We will compare PowerStore with the alternatives on your numbers, and plan the migration so it happens on your timetable.

  1. Tell us what you run. The arrays and models, rough capacity, and the support end dates on your contracts. No need to share quotes.
  2. We map your options. Refresh like for like, migrate to another platform, consolidate, or extend for a while with third party maintenance, with the real cost and risk of each.
  3. We plan and deliver it. Supply and implementation by C4C, Dell professional services or a mix with your own team, whichever is best for you, timed against your support dates.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dell Unity end of life?

The original Unity models, such as the Unity 300 to 600 and the F models, passed end of standard support on 31 July 2026, apart from the 300 DC, 400 DC, 350F DC and 450F DC, which run to 31 December 2027. Unity XT All Flash stopped being sold on 1 August 2025 and is supported to 31 July 2030. Unity XT hybrid is sold until 31 January 2028, with support to 31 January 2033.

Has Dell stopped selling Unity XT?

Dell stopped selling the Unity XT All Flash models, the 380F, 480F, 680F and 880F, on 1 August 2025. The Unity XT hybrid models are listed for sale until 31 January 2028, although Dell’s rows for EU countries show 31 July 2026, so UK buyers should confirm with Dell.

How long will Unity XT be supported?

Dell lists end of standard support for Unity XT All Flash as 31 July 2030, which is also its end of security support, and for Unity XT hybrid as 31 January 2033. Capacity can be added until the end of expansion date, 4 August 2028 for All Flash and 31 January 2031 for hybrid.

What replaces Dell Unity?

PowerStore is Dell’s successor for Unity and Unity XT, and Dell provides import tooling to move data from Unity to PowerStore. It is not the only option. A refresh is the right moment to compare PowerStore with other platforms on your workloads and your numbers.

How do you migrate from Unity to PowerStore?

Dell’s Universal Storage Import tools can bring data into PowerStore from Unity, Unity XT and several other Dell and third party arrays. Block and file imports work differently, and native file import depends on the PowerStoreOS version, so check Dell’s current documentation and plan protocols, cutover windows and rollback before anything is ordered.

Should we stay on Unity until end of support?

If a Unity XT system is well within support and meets your needs, there is no reason to rush. For original Unity models already past end of standard support, plan the move now. Either way, start the comparison around twelve months before the date that matters, so you buy and migrate on your terms.

Is third party maintenance an option for Unity?

For an older Unity system you plan to retire within a year or two, third party maintenance can extend it at lower cost. You give up new firmware, features and, after the end of security support, security updates, and parts and escalation come from the third party. We will talk you through whether it is sensible for your estate.

Can C4C help with a Unity refresh?

Yes. We are an official Dell Technologies partner, our founders spent over a decade at EMC selling these arrays, and we also partner with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data. We compare PowerStore with the alternatives, supply the right platform, and plan and deliver the migration with Dell professional services, our team or yours, whichever is best.
