Dell EMC storage end of life dates: VNX, Unity, Isilon, Compellent, XtremIO, VMAX and Data Domain

If you still run VNX, Isilon, Compellent, XtremIO, VMAX or early Unity, the support clock is either running out or has already stopped. This guide gives the end of sale and end of standard support dates for each family, taken from Dell’s own end of life list, explains what the terms mean, and sets out your options: refresh, migrate, consolidate or extend for a while.

In short

Most older Dell EMC arrays are already past end of standard support. Every VNX, the first generation XtremIO, the original Unity models and the VMAX3 have all passed it, and the SC5020, SC7020 and VMAX 250F passed in August and September 2026. Next up are the XtremIO X2 in January 2027, the VMAX 950F in July 2027 and the Unity DC models in December 2027. Unity XT All Flash stopped being sold on 1 August 2025 and is supported to 31 July 2030. The tables below give the dates for each family, from Dell's own end of life list.

Who we are

C4C is an independent UK technology consultancy and an official Dell Technologies partner. Nick Watson and Paul Smith each spent over a decade at EMC, which Dell later bought, selling these arrays to finance, banking and telcos, so we know the estate, the upgrade paths and how Dell sells the refresh. We supply, implement and support Dell storage, with hardware break fix support from Dell as normal for enterprise arrays. We also partner with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data and are tied to none of them, so we will tell you if staying put, extending or moving to another platform is the better answer. Tell us what you run.

Running storage past its end of support date rarely fails on the day. It fails later, when a disk shelf needs a part, a firmware fix never comes, or a security flaw is published with no patch. The point of knowing the dates is to plan the refresh or the move while you still have time to compare options and negotiate, rather than buying under pressure.

What do Dell's end of life terms mean?

Dell publishes four milestones for each hardware product. The definitions below are Dell's own, from its security support policy. Source: Dell KB 000208328, security support policy.

  • End of sales life (EOL). "The date after which products can no longer be ordered."
  • End of expansion. The date after which you can no longer add capacity, and which Dell's list pairs with the end of mechanical replacements.
  • End of standard support (EOSS). "The date after which basic maintenance and support services are no longer guaranteed (for example, maintenance, access to new features, technology, or fixes)."
  • End of security support (EoSecS). "The date after which security updates are no longer guaranteed."

The tables below show end of sale and end of standard support, the two dates that drive most refresh decisions. A status of "Passed" means the end of standard support date is before 12 October 2026, when this guide was last checked.

The Unity XT hybrid models show an end of sale of 31 July 2026 in Dell's rows for EU countries, against 31 January 2028 elsewhere. Dell does not say why, so UK customers should confirm with Dell which applies. Our guide to Dell Unity end of life and migrating to PowerStore covers the options in detail.

What are your options when an array reaches end of support?

  • Refresh like for like. Move to the current Dell platform for the job: PowerStore for most Unity, VNX and SC estates, PowerScale for Isilon, PowerMax for the largest block workloads, and PowerProtect Data Domain for backup targets. Dell's import tooling can bring data across from many older Dell arrays. This is usually the lowest risk route if the platform still fits.
  • Migrate to another platform. A refresh is the natural moment to check whether a different array, or a different architecture, fits better. Compare on your workloads and the full cost, including the migration itself. See our guides to enterprise storage migration and what a storage migration really costs.
  • Consolidate. Several ageing arrays can often become one modern system, with better data reduction and lower power and support costs.
  • Extend for a while with third party maintenance. For a stable workload on an array you plan to retire, third party maintenance can buy time at lower cost. Third party providers commonly quote savings of 40 to 70 percent against manufacturer support, though that is their claim. The trade offs are real: no new firmware or features, no security updates after the end of security support date, a different route for parts and escalation, and, according to third party providers, possible recertification costs if you later return to Dell support. Dell has not confirmed those costs publicly.

If an array is already out of warranty and support, Dell offers a one time fee remote service for a single issue: two hours of remote help, without parts or onsite labour. Source: Dell KB 000223825. It is a stopgap, not a support plan.

The honest test

If an array is past end of standard support and still running something that matters, the question is not whether to act but how fast. Start the comparison twelve months before a support date where you can, because a refresh bought under pressure costs more and migrates worse. Tell us what you run and the dates and we will tell you which route fits.

Running Dell EMC arrays near or past end of support?

Tell us what you run and when support ends. We will give you an honest view of whether to refresh, migrate, consolidate or extend, and what each really costs.

  1. Tell us what you run. The arrays and models, rough capacity, and the support end dates on your contracts. No need to share quotes.
  2. We map your options. Refresh like for like, migrate to another platform, consolidate, or extend for a while with third party maintenance, with the real cost and risk of each.
  3. We plan and deliver it. Supply and implementation by C4C, Dell professional services or a mix with your own team, whichever is best for you, timed against your support dates.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dell EMC VNX end of life?

Every VNX family has already passed end of standard support. The VNX2 models, VNX5200 to VNX8000, reached it on 31 January 2023, and the older VNX1 models, VNXe and VNX F models between 2019 and 2023. Dell also lists 31 January 2023 as the end of security support for VNX2. Any VNX still in production is running without Dell standard support.

When does Isilon reach end of support?

It depends on the generation. The NL410, X410, S210 and HD400 nodes passed end of standard support on 29 February 2024, and the X210 on 31 March 2026. The Generation 6 nodes, such as the H500 and A2000, reach it on 31 May 2028, and the F800 and F810 on 31 May 2029. Isilon was renamed PowerScale in 2020, and the newer PowerScale nodes run to 2030 and 2031.

Is XtremIO end of life?

XtremIO is no longer sold. The X1 models passed end of standard support on 30 April 2023, and the X2 models (X2 S, X2 R and X2 T) reach end of standard support on 31 January 2027, which Dell also lists as their end of security support.

When does VMAX support end?

The VMAX 450F and 850F passed end of standard support on 31 October 2023, the VMAX3 100K, 200K and 400K on 30 September 2024, and the VMAX 250F on 30 September 2026. The VMAX 950F reaches it on 31 July 2027, and the PowerMax 2000 and 8000 on 31 October 2029.

When is Compellent end of life?

The SC5020, SC7020 and SC9000 passed end of standard support on 31 August 2026. The SCv3000 and SCv3020 reach it on 31 August 2028, which Dell also lists as the end of security support for Compellent. Older SC models such as the SC4020 and SC8000 have long passed.

What is the difference between end of sale and end of support?

End of sale is the date after which a product can no longer be ordered. End of standard support is the date after which Dell no longer guarantees basic maintenance and support, including fixes. Dell also publishes an end of expansion date for adding capacity and replacement parts, and an end of security support date for security updates.

Can I keep running an array after end of support?

You can, but you carry the risk. Dell no longer guarantees fixes, and security updates stop at the end of security support date. Some organisations extend an array for a year or two with third party maintenance while they plan the move. That can be sensible for stable workloads, but it means no new firmware or features, and you should plan the exit rather than drift.

Can C4C help us replace an array that is out of support?

Yes. We are an official Dell Technologies partner, and we also partner with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data, so we can compare a Dell refresh with the alternatives on your numbers, supply it, and plan and deliver the migration with Dell professional services or your own team where that is best.
