Dell PowerStore Elite explained: the 1500, 5500 and 9500, and when they fit
Dell announced PowerStore Elite in May 2026 and started shipping the new models in July. If you run PowerStore, Unity or an older Dell array, it is now the default answer you will be offered. Here is what it actually is, where it genuinely helps, and what to check before you buy.
PowerStore Elite is Dell’s new generation of its unified PowerStore array, in three models: the 1500, 5500 and 9500. Dell puts up to 40 drives and 5.8 petabytes of effective capacity in one 3U chassis, assuming 6:1 data reduction, and raises its data reduction guarantee to 6:1. The new models cluster with earlier PowerStore systems, so existing customers can add them without a migration. It suits block, file, virtual machine and container workloads in the midrange. Check the guarantee conditions, the TLC or QLC choice and how it fits your existing estate before you sign.
C4C Group is an independent UK technology consultancy and an official partner of Dell Technologies, NetApp, HPE and VAST Data, tied to none of them. Nick Watson and Paul Smith spent over a decade at EMC selling enterprise arrays to finance, banking and telco customers, so we read a launch from the buyer’s side. We supply, implement and support what we recommend, with hardware break fix support from the vendor, and we will tell you when a different platform fits better. Talk to us about it.
What is Dell PowerStore Elite?
PowerStore Elite is the name Dell gave to its new PowerStore platform at Dell Technologies World on 19 May 2026. It comes in three models, the PowerStore 1500, 5500 and 9500, which Dell’s own lifecycle data shows as released on 22 July 2026. Dell describes it as packing up to 40 drives and 5.8 petabytes of effective capacity into a single 3U chassis, with that effective figure assuming an average 6:1 data reduction. Like earlier PowerStore systems it is a unified array: Dell says it supports block, file, virtual machine and container workloads, with replication over Ethernet and Fibre Channel, and it can run on either TLC or QLC flash so you can trade performance against cost per terabyte. What is actually new?
- A refreshed hardware platform. Dell positions the new generation on a refreshed hardware platform with a container based software architecture. Dell’s own performance claims compare the new models against the previous generation, so treat them as vendor figures until you see them on your workload. Source: Dell press release, 19 May 2026.
- A 6:1 data reduction guarantee. Dell raised its PowerStore guarantee from 5:1 to 6:1, applying to new arrays installed with PowerStoreOS 5.0, and notes that actual rates vary by data. Its Future Proof Program lists 6:1 for PowerStore Gen 3. Sources: Dell press release, 19 May 2026, Dell Future Proof Program.
- Clustering with earlier PowerStore. Dell says the new systems cluster with earlier PowerStore deployments, so existing customers can add the new generation and move data and workloads without downtime or a migration project. Source: Dell press release, 19 May 2026.
- Ransomware detection on the array. Dell Cyber Detect brings AI based ransomware detection into PowerStore, which Dell said would follow in the third quarter of 2026. Source: Dell press release, 19 May 2026.
Who is PowerStore Elite for?
It fits organisations that want a capable unified midrange array: mixed block and file, virtualisation and growing container estates, with strong data reduction and a simple operating model. It is the natural refresh path for existing PowerStore customers, because of the clustering, and the obvious Dell target for Unity and Unity XT estates reaching end of sale. Our guide to Unity end of life and migrating to PowerStore covers that route, and the storage end of life checker shows where your current arrays sit.
When might it not be the right answer?
- The most demanding block workloads. For mission critical, very high scale block estates, Dell’s own PowerMax is the platform built for that tier. Our PowerStore vs PowerMax vs Unity guide sets out the line.
- Large unstructured and AI data. Scale out file and object, or AI training data, usually belongs on a scale out platform such as PowerScale or a dedicated AI data platform. See storage for AI.
- Data that will not reduce. The 5.8 petabyte figure assumes 6:1. Encrypted, compressed or media data reduces far less, so size on usable capacity and your own data profile. Our guide to effective capacity claims explains how.
- A deliberate multi vendor strategy. If you are weighing Dell against NetApp, Everpure or HPE, compare like for like. See Dell vs NetApp vs Pure Storage.
What should you check before you buy?
- The guarantee conditions. Which data types are covered, how the ratio is measured, and what the remedy is if it is missed.
- TLC or QLC. Match the media to the workload rather than to the headline capacity.
- Your existing estate. Whether clustering with your current PowerStore systems is the right route, or whether a clean deployment is simpler.
- Support terms and the full term cost. Compare the whole term, including support renewal, not just year one.
- Migration from older arrays. For Unity, VNX or SC Series, plan the move and the timing against your support end dates.

Frequently asked questions
What is Dell PowerStore Elite?
PowerStore Elite is Dell’s new generation of its PowerStore unified storage array, announced on 19 May 2026, with three models: the PowerStore 1500, 5500 and 9500. Dell says it fits up to 40 drives and 5.8 petabytes of effective capacity in a 3U chassis, assuming 6:1 data reduction, and supports block, file, virtual machine and container workloads.
When did PowerStore Elite become available?
Dell said PowerStore Elite would be globally available in July 2026, and Dell’s lifecycle data lists the PowerStore 1500, 5500 and 9500 as released on 22 July 2026. Dell Cyber Detect for PowerStore was due to follow in the third quarter of 2026.
What is the PowerStore Elite data reduction guarantee?
Dell raised the PowerStore guarantee from 5:1 to 6:1, applying to new arrays installed with PowerStoreOS 5.0. Actual reduction depends on your data, and the guarantee has conditions, so check what is covered and what the remedy is before relying on it.
Can PowerStore Elite cluster with older PowerStore systems?
Yes, according to Dell. The new systems cluster with earlier PowerStore deployments, so existing customers can add the new generation and move data and workloads without downtime or a separate migration project.
Is PowerStore Elite the replacement for Dell Unity?
It is Dell’s natural successor for Unity and Unity XT estates, and Dell provides import tools to move from Unity, Unity XT, SC Series, VNX2 and other sources onto PowerStore. Whether it is the right replacement for you depends on your workloads, so compare it on fit.
Should I choose PowerStore Elite or PowerMax?
PowerStore Elite suits the unified midrange: mixed block and file, virtualisation and containers. PowerMax is Dell’s platform for the most demanding mission critical block workloads. Most organisations need one or the other, and a few need both.
Is C4C a Dell partner?
Yes. C4C is an official Dell Technologies partner and also partners with NetApp, HPE and VAST Data, tied to none. Our founders spent over a decade at EMC, which Dell later bought. We supply, implement and support Dell storage, with hardware break fix from Dell.
